Who we are

Grenoside Guides was formed in 1930 by Miss M. Umpleby who was the first Guide Leader and also Cub Scout Leader. 131st Sheffield (Grenoside) Guide Company consisted of 16 girls formed into three patrols; Thrush, Kingfisher and Robin. The Brownie Pack was formed within a year of the Guides in 1931 and Miss C.W. Hoyle became the first Brown Owl. The Guides and Brownies closed for a while in the late 1950s re-opening in 1963 and 1964 respectively. The Ranger Guide Section was opened in 1978 with seven girls under the leadership of Mrs E. Birkby.

In 1987, the Guide Association introduced a section for 5 to 7 year olds – Rainbows and it wasn’t long until a Rainbow unit was welcomed into the Grenoside guiding family.

Guiding in Grenoside continues to grow with over 80 girls and young women attending Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Whilst its members, uniforms, promise and many other things have changed over the years, the essence of guiding remains the same. Guiding is all about providing girls and young women with opportunities, adventure, new experiences and the chance to develop new skills in a safe, girl-only space.

What we do

With guiding girls have fun, adventure and the space to discover their potential.

They might go to their first ever sleepover, canoe on rivers, learn about body confidence, and lead their own camp. Or sometimes they simply have fun and try new things with friends.

Girls take what they do in guiding with them as they grow up. Everything from working in a team, to taking the lead, to speaking out on issues they care about. It helps them develop the skills and confidence to become the young women they want to be. And to make a difference to the world around them.

In 2018/19, Girlguiding launched a new programme, which delivers the fun and varied range of activities that you expect from guiding, and of course, plenty of badges to earn. It introduces new topics, new skills and new ways for girls to broaden their horizons. The new programme has six consistent themes that run all the way from Rainbows to Rangers.

Girls are awarded Anniversary Badges to celebrate membership and commitment. There’s a badge to mark each year a girl spends as part of the guiding family – no matter what age she joins.

Interest badges are a girls’ opportunity to explore her own interests, hobbies and passions outside of the unit setting.

There are lots of fun unit meeting activities of varying lengths and styles, which add balance and variation.

Skills builders are designed to stretch and challenge girls of all abilities and enable them to develop core skills throughout their guiding journey.

A combination of unit meeting activities, interest badges and skills builders on the same theme will help girls build up to a Theme award that demonstrates the time they’ve dedicated to exploring that area.

Once girls have completed all six Theme awards within one section, they’ll have the chance to complete one final challenge to earn a very special ‘top award’ – their section Gold Award.
